The science run: Bundle of joy may undermine marital bliss By Susanne Rust of the Journal Sentinel

That bundle of "joy" the stork brings young, hopeful couples may be just a time bomb for a marriage, according to new research from the University of Denver and Texas A&M.
The team of psychologists looked at more than 200 couples over a span of eight years and found the arrival of a baby significantly decreased couples' marital satisfaction.
Indeed, this was true in 90% of the couples followed.
"Couples who do not have children also show diminished marital quality over time," Scott Stanley, a psychologist at the University of Denver, said in a statement. "However, having a baby accelerates the deterioration, especially seen during periods of adjustment right after the birth of a child."
The study was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
The team also found that couples who lived together before marriage had more problems after birth than those who lived separately before marriage. The same held true for couples whose own parents had fought or divorced.
Some couples bucked the trend and said their relationships were stronger post-birth.
Also, couples who were married longer before the arrival of a child, or had higher incomes, seemed more resilient to the trend.
