Pruning Rose of Sharon bushes

Does anyone know anything about Rose of Sharon bushes? I have quite a few and I think they need to be cut back or something. They have by far outgrown the spots I planted them. Is there any particular time to do that? ???

Because rose of sharon forms flower buds on new shoots each summer, just like roses, they're relatively easy to keep pruned to a desirable size.

Very interesting--thanks! I have one that has gotten so big it is top heavy and falling to the side. I am afraid it is going to pull itself out of the ground. But I will try to wait until March. I think I planted some too close together because I didn't think they would have such a wide spread.
